How Quartz Countertops are Made:

Quartz countertops are man-made, engineered stone countertops formed by combining 90% ground quartz (a natural, hard mineral) with 8-10% resins, polymers and pigments. This forms a hard granite-like surface. The appearance depends on the process used to grind the raw quartz crystals – coarsely ground quartz produces a flecked appearance, while finely ground quartz produces a smooth look.

Environmental Impact:

Quartz is the second most abundant material in the earth’s crust, the acrylic resins used is a petroleum based by-product making the mining and production of quartz products light to moderate in terms of environmental impact. Because they are long lasting and durable the life span on quartz products are extremely high and therefore waste is low. Additionally, a few major brands including Zodiaq, Formica, Wilsonart and Silestone have been certified by GreenGuard as low emitting.
